The School of Mechanical Engineering is introducing a four‑year Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering (Honours) program that builds directly on existing mechanical engineering strengths in fluid dynamics, structures, thermodynamics, materials, and systems design. While Mechanical Engineering offers broad-based preparation for multidisciplinary engineering practice, Aerospace Engineering builds upon these foundations to explore specialized applications in aircraft and spacecraft design, propulsion, aerodynamics, flight stability, and space systems. The new degree integrates theoretical coursework with hands‑on laboratory work, design studios, and industry placements to prepare graduates for aircraft, spacecraft, UAV, satellite, and propulsion systems work. The program aligns with international accreditation expectations and creates a clear postgraduate pathway in aerospace research and practice.
The proposed program is designed to equip students with both theoretical insight and hands-on experience in the design, simulation, testing, and optimization of aerospace structures and systems. Laboratories and design studios will be established to facilitate experimental learning in areas such as wind tunnel testing, propulsion analysis, flight dynamics, and materials behaviour under atmospheric and extra-atmospheric conditions. Research areas will include sustainable aviation technologies, space vehicle systems, unmanned aerial systems, and advanced composites.
In line with PNGUoT mission to develop competent, ethical, and innovative graduates, the Aerospace Engineering program also emphasizes communication skills, project-based teamwork, and a commitment to problem solving in service to local and regional development. Students will be encouraged to engage with research, industry-linked projects, and multidisciplinary collaboration across engineering domains. Through this initiative, the Faculty of Engineering affirms its dedication to producing forward-thinking engineers who can contribute meaningfully to Papua New Guinea’s technological advancement and participate in shaping the Asia-Pacific region’s aerospace future. Postgraduate pathways in aerospace-related fields will also be developed in due course to extend the academic depth and research capacity of the discipline.
